RED WORMS-
Each red worm ingests its weight in organic matter every twenty-four hours. Its intricate digestive tract makes it possible for the red worms to excrete highly nutritious fertilizer known as castings. These castings are the most perfect plant food known to man, and contain: 5 times the available nitrogen, 7 times the available phosphorus, 3 times the exchangeable magnesium, 11 times the available potash and 1 ½ times more calcium than found in six inches of good topsoil. The increases are directly attributable to the organic matter eaten by earthworms. Castings are water soluble and immediately available to plant life. Castings do not heat and will not burn plants regardless of the quantity made available to the plant.
The action of red worms in compost piles will speed up the reduction of organic material in one half the time required by bacterial action alone.

USES: . EACH REDWORM INGESTS ITS WEIGHT IN ORGANICS EVERY DAY. ITS DIGESTIVE TRACT MAKES IT POSSIBLE FOR THE RED WORMS TO EXCRETE HIGHLY NUTRITIOUS FERTILIZER KNOWN AS CASTINGS. CASTINGS ARE HIGH IN NITROGEN, PHOSPHORUS, MAGNESIUM, POTASH & CALCIUM. CASTINGS ARE WATER SOLUBLE AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE TO PLANT LIFE. THE ACTION OF REDWORMS IN COMPOST PILES WILL SPEED UP THE REDUCTION OF ORGANIC MATERIAL IN 1/2 THE TIME REQUIRED BY BACTERIAL ACTION ALONE.
Care Of Your Red worms:
Container: -Almost any container that keeps worms in, offers drainage and sufficient oxygen can be used. The basic worm box size is one foot high, two feet deep and three feet wide and has drainage holes in the bottom. However, a variety of containers will do.
Bedding: We recommend a bedding of shredded newspaper and garden soil. Tear regular newsprint only (no colored pages) in strips of approximately 1-1/2 inches wide. You will need about 10 pounds for the above container. Add about a gallon of garden soil and mix with water. The bedding should be moistened to the "firm ball stage." …when squeezed, water droplets (not streams) will fall and when released, will form a ball.
NEVER USE WATER FROM A WATER SOFTENING SYSTEM AS THE SALT WILL KILL THE WORMS.
Spread the worms and the bedding they came in over the moistened bedding. The worms should disappear in a few minutes.
Food: Red worms will consume any kind of biodegradable matter except materials containing excess oil or chemicals.
Materials recommended: Fruits, vegetables, coffee grounds, tea bags, egg shells, and vegetable matter.
Materials to avoid: Meat, bones, salt, vinegar, cooking oils and dairy products.
How are our Red worms different from other worms, such as night crawlers?
They are different, as the night crawler is a burrowing worm while red worms live in the top few inches of soil.
Redworm Facts:
Eisenia Foetida
Also known as compost worms
Life Span is 2 to 5 years
2 to 5 cocoons per week. 4 is normal with good conditions
2 to 3 worms hatch from each cocoon
45 day hatch time
6 weeks for worms to go from hatchling to adult breeder
Planning:
1000 worms with yield 4 cocoons per week. 3 worms will hatch from each cocoon creating 12,000 worms per week.
48,000 worms will be created a month in a well cared for bed. In 6 weeks that first 12,000 worms will be breeding.
You can see how quickly 1000 worms will grow into hundreds of thousands.
